Accessibility Statement

Last updated: June 2026

SAIGE Africa Advisory and Research Center LBG is committed to making saigeafrica.org accessible to everyone, including people who use assistive technologies or who have visual, auditory, motor, or cognitive differences. This statement explains what we do to support accessibility, where we know limitations exist, and how you can reach us if you encounter a barrier.

Our Commitment

We believe that access to agribusiness intelligence and policy insight should not depend on a person's physical or technical circumstances. Accessibility is therefore a design principle, not an afterthought, and we treat it as a continuing responsibility rather than a box to tick.

The saigeafrica.org website is under active development. We are making deliberate choices at every stage to ensure that new features and content meet accessibility expectations, and we actively review and improve what is already live.

Conformance Target

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). WCAG 2.1 AA is the internationally recognised benchmark for accessible web content.

We treat this target as an ongoing goal. We do not claim full, unconditional conformance across every page and every piece of content — particularly given that the site is growing and some third-party or downloadable content is not yet fully within our control — but we are actively working towards it and we take reported gaps seriously.

Measures and Features We Provide

The following accessibility measures are built into the current version of saigeafrica.org:

  • Semantic HTML structure and landmarks: pages use appropriate HTML5 sectioning elements (header, nav, main, footer, aside) so that assistive technologies can understand the page layout and allow users to navigate between regions efficiently.
  • Logical heading hierarchy: headings follow a consistent H1 → H2 → H3 order, giving screen reader users a clear outline of each page.
  • Keyboard navigation: every interactive element — links, buttons, forms, and navigation menus — is reachable and operable using a keyboard alone, without requiring a mouse or pointer device.
  • Visible focus indicators: when you navigate by keyboard, a clearly visible focus ring appears on the element that currently has focus, so you always know where you are on the page.
  • Descriptive alternative text: meaningful images carry concise, descriptive alt text that conveys the purpose or content of the image to users who cannot see it. Decorative images are marked so that screen readers skip them.
  • Sufficient colour contrast: our colour palette has been selected and refined to provide adequate contrast between text and its background, in line with the WCAG 2.1 AA contrast ratios (minimum 4.5 : 1 for body text, 3 : 1 for large text and UI components).
  • Responsive layout and zoom support: the site adapts gracefully to mobile, tablet, and desktop viewports. You can increase your browser's text size or page zoom up to 200 % without loss of content or functionality.
  • Reduced motion support: we respect the 'prefers-reduced-motion' setting in your operating system. When reduced motion is enabled, non-essential animations — such as the publication ticker — are automatically disabled to reduce the risk of discomfort for users with vestibular or motion-sensitivity conditions.
  • Readable typography: body text uses typefaces and line lengths chosen to support comfortable reading across a range of screen sizes and reading conditions.

Known Limitations

We want to be honest about where the site does not yet fully meet our accessibility target. Known limitations include:

  • Downloadable PDFs and documents: some research publications, briefs, and reports available for download have not yet been tagged or structured for full screen reader compatibility. We are working through our document library and applying accessible PDF practices, but this is an ongoing process.
  • Embedded and third-party content: certain maps, data visualisations, video embeds, or social media widgets are served by third-party providers whose accessibility is outside our direct control. We evaluate third-party components before integrating them and raise concerns with providers, but we cannot guarantee full WCAG compliance for all embedded content.
  • Older content: some earlier pages or archived materials may not reflect our current accessibility standards. These are being reviewed and updated progressively.

If you encounter a barrier not listed here, please let us know. Your report directly informs our improvement roadmap.

Assistive Technology and Browser Compatibility

saigeafrica.org is built to work with a broad range of modern browsers and assistive technologies. We recommend using an up-to-date version of your preferred browser (such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge) for the best experience.

The site has been developed with compatibility in mind for common screen readers (including NVDA, JAWS, and VoiceOver) and for keyboard-only navigation. If you experience difficulty with a particular assistive technology or browser combination, please contact us and include details of the browser, operating system, and assistive technology you are using — it helps us reproduce and resolve the issue more quickly.

Feedback and Contact

If you encounter an accessibility barrier on saigeafrica.org — whether it is something on this list or something we have not identified — we want to hear from you.

Please contact us at hello@saigeafrica.org. When you write, it is helpful to include:

  • A description of the barrier or difficulty you experienced.
  • The web address (URL) of the page or content where it occurred.
  • The browser, operating system, and any assistive technology you were using.
  • Your preferred method of contact for our response.

We commit to acknowledging your message promptly and to working in good faith to understand and resolve the issue within a reasonable timeframe. Where a resolution requires development work, we will keep you informed of progress.

Alternative Formats

If you need any content from saigeafrica.org in an alternative accessible format — for example a plain-text version of a publication, a differently formatted document, or a summary of visual content — please contact us at hello@saigeafrica.org and tell us what you need.

We will do our best to provide the information in a format that works for you, or to point you to an equivalent accessible resource.

Ongoing Improvement

Accessibility is not a one-time project. As saigeafrica.org grows — with new publications, tools, and features — we continue to apply accessibility thinking at the design and development stage rather than retrofitting it afterwards.

Our ongoing efforts include:

  • Reviewing new content and features against WCAG 2.1 AA criteria before they are published.
  • Progressively auditing and remediating existing content, starting with the most widely accessed pages and documents.
  • Evaluating third-party components and integrations for accessibility before adoption.
  • Acting on feedback from users who experience barriers, and treating those reports as a primary source of insight.
  • Staying current with evolving guidelines and best practices, including future WCAG updates.

We recognise that accessibility is a journey, and we are committed to making steady, meaningful progress.
