SAIGE Africa Advisory and Research Center LBG ('SAIGE', 'we', 'us', 'our') is committed to protecting your personal data and handling it responsibly. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect through saigeafrica.org, why we collect it, how we use and protect it, and what rights you have under Ghana's Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843).
Who We Are and Scope of This Policy
SAIGE Africa Advisory and Research Center LBG is a company limited by guarantee incorporated and operating in Ghana. We are a pan-African agribusiness intelligence and advisory think tank. Our activities include publishing research, reports and insights; providing advisory services to governments, development partners, the private sector, startups and researchers; developing an intelligence platform; and distributing an email briefing and newsletter.
This Policy applies to personal data collected through our website at saigeafrica.org (the 'Website'). It does not govern data collected through separate offline engagement, contracted advisory mandates or any other channels unless those channels explicitly reference this Policy.
Where we act as a data controller in relation to information you provide through the Website, we are responsible for how that data is handled. Our contact details for data and privacy matters are set out at the end of this Policy.
Information We Collect
We collect information that you provide to us directly, and information that is collected automatically when you use the Website:
- Contact form data: your name, email address, organisation, organisation type, area of research or expertise, the type of enquiry you are making, and the content of your message.
- Newsletter / briefing sign-up: your email address only.
- Analytics and usage data: information about how you use the Website — the pages you view, the time, duration and sequence of your visit, how you arrived at the site (for example a referring page or search term), and your approximate location, device type, browser and operating system. This is collected through cookies and similar technologies (see the Cookies section), and only where you have consented to non-essential cookies.
- Server log data: your IP address, browser and device user-agent string, the pages you request, and timestamps, recorded in standard server access logs by our hosting provider.
Contact form submissions are transmitted to us by email and are not stored in a separate customer database. We do not operate visitor accounts on the Website, and we do not process any payment information.
How and Why We Use Your Information
We use your personal data for the specific purposes described below. We rely on the lawful bases available under the Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843) where applicable.
Contact form enquiries: Your name, email address, organisation, organisation type, area of expertise, enquiry type and message are used solely to understand and respond to your enquiry and to route your message to the appropriate member of the SAIGE team. The completed form is transmitted to us by email via our transactional email service provider (Resend). It is not stored in a separate customer database or CRM. The lawful basis is the necessity to take steps at your request prior to, or in connection with, providing a service, and our legitimate interest in responding to inbound professional enquiries.
Newsletter / briefing: Your email address is used to send you SAIGE's email briefing and other communications you have signed up to receive. The lawful basis is your consent. You may withdraw consent at any time by following the unsubscribe link in any email or by contacting us at hello@saigeafrica.org.
Server logs: IP addresses and related technical data in server logs are used to maintain the security, integrity and operation of the Website — for example, to detect and respond to unauthorised access or attacks. The lawful basis is our legitimate interest in securing and operating the Website.
Analytics and site improvement: We use analytics and usage data to understand how visitors find and use the Website, to measure the reach of our research and publications, to diagnose technical problems, and to improve the Website's content, structure and performance. Where this relies on non-essential cookies or similar technologies, our lawful basis is your consent, which you can give or decline through our cookie banner and withdraw at any time.
We do not use your personal data to make automated decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you. We do not sell, rent, trade or otherwise commercialise your personal data, and we do not use it for advertising or for marketing beyond the newsletter you have explicitly signed up for.
Cookies and Similar Technologies
Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website; similar technologies include pixels and browser local storage. We use cookies and similar technologies in two categories:
- Strictly necessary cookies — required for the Website to function correctly and securely, including to remember your cookie preferences. These are always active and do not require consent.
- Analytics and performance cookies — set by our analytics provider to help us understand how the Website is used, such as which pages are most visited and how visitors move through the site. These are not essential to the Website's operation.
We place non-essential cookies, including analytics cookies, only where you have given your consent. When you first visit the Website, a cookie banner lets you accept or decline non-essential cookies. You can change your choice at any time through the cookie preferences control, and you can block or delete cookies through your browser settings, although some parts of the Website may not work as intended if you do.
We currently use Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google LLC, to generate aggregated statistics about how the Website is used. You can decline analytics cookies in our banner, use your browser controls, or install Google's browser opt-out add-on to prevent your data being used by Google Analytics. If we change our analytics provider, we will update this section.
Service Providers and Disclosure of Your Information
We engage a small number of carefully selected third-party service providers (data processors) who process personal data on our behalf and strictly under our instructions:
- Resend — transactional email delivery. Contact form submissions are transmitted to our team via Resend's email infrastructure. Resend processes this data solely to deliver the email.
- Hostinger — website hosting. Hostinger hosts the Website and therefore processes server log data (IP addresses, user-agent strings, request details) in the ordinary course of operating the hosting infrastructure.
- Sanity — content management system. Sanity stores and serves SAIGE's published website content (articles, reports, pages). Sanity does not process visitor personal data beyond what standard content-delivery infrastructure may log.
- Google Analytics (Google LLC) — website analytics. Google Analytics processes usage and device data to provide us with aggregated statistics about how the Website is used. Google may set cookies and process data on infrastructure outside Ghana, including in the United States.
These providers are permitted to use your data only as necessary to deliver the services described above. They are not permitted to use it for their own purposes.
We do not share your personal data with any other third parties except in the following limited circumstances:
- Where we are required to do so by applicable law, regulation or a binding order of a competent authority or court.
- Where disclosure is necessary to protect the rights, property or safety of SAIGE, our staff or others, to the extent permitted by law.
We do not sell, rent, license or otherwise transfer your personal data to third parties for their own commercial purposes.
International Transfers
Ghana's Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843) restricts the transfer of personal data outside Ghana unless adequate protections are in place. Some of our service providers — including Resend, Sanity and Google (Google Analytics) — are based outside Ghana and may process data on infrastructure located outside Ghana.
We take steps to ensure that such transfers are made subject to appropriate safeguards, which may include contractual clauses binding the recipient to data-protection obligations equivalent to those applicable in Ghana. Where you have consented to us processing your data (for example, by signing up for our newsletter), that consent extends to necessary processing by our service providers consistent with this Policy.
If you have questions about the international transfer of your data, please contact us using the details at the end of this Policy.
Data Retention
We retain personal data only for as long as it is necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, or as required or permitted by law.
Contact form enquiries are transmitted to us by email. We retain emails in accordance with our internal email management practices. We review and delete correspondence that is no longer needed for business or legal purposes on a regular basis.
Newsletter subscriber email addresses are retained for as long as you remain subscribed. If you unsubscribe, your email address is removed from our active mailing list promptly; residual records may be retained for a short period thereafter to comply with anti-spam requirements or to honour a suppression request.
Server log data retained by our hosting provider is subject to Hostinger's standard log-retention periods, which typically range from a few days to several weeks, and is not retained by SAIGE beyond what the hosting provider holds in the ordinary course.
Where no specific retention period is identified above, data is retained for no longer than is reasonably necessary to fulfil the relevant purpose and is then securely deleted or anonymised.
Security
We implement reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your personal data against unauthorised access, loss, misuse, alteration or disclosure. The Website is served over HTTPS, and we use reputable service providers with their own security programmes.
However, no method of electronic transmission or storage is completely secure. Whilst we strive to protect your personal data, we cannot guarantee absolute security, and you transmit information to us at your own risk. If you become aware of any security concern involving your data, please notify us immediately at hello@saigeafrica.org.
Your Rights Under the Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843)
Under Ghana's Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843), you have the following rights in relation to personal data we hold about you:
- Right of access: you may request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Right to correction: you may request that we correct any inaccurate or incomplete personal data we hold about you.
- Right to erasure: you may request that we delete your personal data where we have no continuing lawful basis to retain it.
- Right to object: you may object to processing of your personal data where we are relying on our legitimate interests as the lawful basis, and we will consider your objection and cease processing unless we have compelling legitimate grounds to continue.
- Right to withdraw consent: where we rely on your consent to process your data (for example, for the newsletter), you may withdraw that consent at any time. Withdrawal of consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out before withdrawal.
- Right to complain: you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Data Protection Commission of Ghana if you consider that our processing of your personal data infringes the Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843).
To exercise any of these rights, please contact us in writing at hello@saigeafrica.org. We will respond within a reasonable time and in any event within the period required by applicable law. We may ask you to verify your identity before processing your request.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with Ghana's Data Protection Commission if you believe that we have not handled your personal data in accordance with the law. The Data Protection Commission can be reached through its official website and offices in Accra.
Children's Privacy
The Website is not directed at children under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe we have inadvertently collected information from a person under 18, please contact us immediately at hello@saigeafrica.org and we will take steps to delete that information.
Third-Party Links
The Website may contain links to external websites, publications or resources operated by third parties. This Policy applies only to saigeafrica.org. We have no control over, and are not responsible for, the privacy practices or content of third-party sites. We encourage you to read the privacy policy of any external site you visit.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, the services we offer, or applicable law. When we make material changes, we will update the 'Last updated' date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this Policy periodically. Your continued use of the Website after an update constitutes your acknowledgement of the revised Policy.
The current version of this Policy is dated June 2026.
